Future Greensboro Mover? Time to sort and purge!

Happy September! The summer is winding down. It is the squirrely time of year where we tend to feel like getting ready or getting back to normal or getting organized. For Steele & Vaughn, the summer was and continues to be our busiest move season. But we are always looking ahead and preparing for the next one.

Many people in Greensboro are just beginning the thought process about a future Greensboro move and this time of year is perfect for planning and preparing. Future Greensboro movers can take advantage of the change in the air and the fall clear out/clean out feeling and start sorting through the contents of their home.

We here at Steele & Vaughn like to get our Greensboro movers thinking ahead to make a future move as smooth as possible. It is a great time of year to prepare and purge! You might not be moving for a while, but it is never too early to think about what stays and what goes if you know a move is on the horizon. Sorting and purging contents of your home can seem like an overwhelming task if you leave it down to the weeks or even a month or two before a move. It could almost be a second job if you have collected a ton over the years.

Start now and start small. Begin with just one cabinet. If you know you are keeping some of the items you sort through but won’t be using them before you move, you can even begin boxing them up and labeling the contents.  One rule of thumb is: if you use it regularly, will use it in the next year, or enjoy it in anyway, then it should probably go with you. Best of all, purging the weight of the contents of your home can help lower the cost of your future move. Remember, your move costs will be calculated based on weight so why not get your home skinny well before actual move day. Be sure to recycle and donate what you will not be keeping. Check out Earth911 or Donationtown for countless resources for donating and recycling your unwanted items.

Like the squirrels, Steele & Vaughn like to get ready for what may come. If you are one of the many future Greensboro movers thinking of moving in the next year or so, prepare ahead and begin your move purge little by little over time. You will be so glad you do it come moving time and so will your wallet. Check back through this upcoming season for purging tips and resources.

Back to School Safety

For the last couple of weeks, Steele & Vaughn has been sharing our resources and ideas for college students moving away to school and younger students starting a new school after a move. In keeping with the back to school theme of August, we would like to bring up the topic of back to school safety.

Back to School Safety is important for all children and their families but if you are recent Greensboro movers and your child will be starting a new school, you will want to focus in on this more than usual as you get used to your new community. Just as you would develop safety plans and precautions in your new home, you want to have an understanding of safety procedures in and around the school.

Steele & Vaughn is always on the lookout for information to share that could be useful to Greensboro movers looking for ways to prepare to move or settle in after a move. We found some great information to share with you regarding back to school safety. Take a look at these great school safety resources.

  1. The National Safety Council provides a Back to School Safety page on their site that provides links to areas dedicated to all matters involving school safety including school transportation safety and school safety. They even have a Back to School Safety Checklist so you as the parent of a child starting a new school can look over the list together and be prepared.
  2. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provide a Safe Youth. Safe Schools page on their site that includes a long list of resources and articles that cover a multitude of youth safety topics. We found it to be a great page for Greensboro movers concerned about keeping their children safe in and around a new school environment.
  3. College Students also have safety procedures and practices to consider. We found a resource for them too. Protection1 Campus Safety Matters is an entire website dedicated to Campus safety. On their Campus Safety Tips page you can find a list of fabulous articles covering all topics having to do with college safety. Be sure to link this one to your son or daughter so that they have it to refer to again and again as they protect themselves at school.

Of course the best resources you have about your particular school can be found at your new school. We suggest you give the school a call to discuss that school’s specific safety practices and programs.

August is always an exciting buzzy time of back to school preparations for families. Steele & Vaughn is always on the lookout for tips and tools to help Greensboro movers prepare for a move and settle into their new homes. We hope you enjoyed our post on Back to School Safety and the resources we found for you. We wish you and your students a fabulous new school year!

Moving to College Time!

It is that time of year again! Millions of students all over the country are preparing for a new college year. Some of them will be leaving the nest for the first time to move into a dorm while others may be moving into their own independent off-campus housing. Both situations come with packing and moving needs.

Steele & Vaughn knows full well the excitement and special needs our Greensboro college students hold since we are a greater Greensboro area moving company that has been helping families move their kids to college for years and years.

Whether your child is moving a short distance or far from home, we can help take the stress out of the move by providing you with a few ideas and resources.

  1. Chances are if your student is moving into a dorm, you will not be taking anything large like furniture. Most dorms provide a bed, desk and small chest of drawers. You won’t have room for much else. You will need to pack things you need for school and a few items to make you feel at home. Steele & Vaughn can help. We are the Greensboro Moving Company that can provide Moving Supply Kits to ensure your student’s items are protected in transit. It is essential not to over-pack since chances are you will get there and find that the space just won’t hold it all. You may be driving your packed items yourself or need to ship them beforehand. Either way you won’t want to over-pack.  Check out these links for ideas on what and what not to pack:
  1. If your college student is moving into off-campus housing, the moving in needs can and will be very different. Some off-campus housing will rent furnished but others will not. Your student and his or her roommates might need to furnish and supply an entire apartment or house. Steele & Vaughn Company is the Greensboro Moving Company that can help with your student’s small move – whether it is a local Greensboro move or a long distance move to another state.
  2.  If your student is attending school in a new state, the logistics of moving their household items can be complex and costly, but Steele & Vaughn can help simply the process. You might think about renting a truck to get their household items to school, and in some cases that might be the least expensive and convenient option, but in some cases it may actually be less expensive, safer, and save a lot of hassle, to use a professional moving service.  Truck rental may seem like the cheaper option, and usually is best option locally, but when you factor in the gas, time, and one way rental fees on a long distance move – full service may be affordable, with a lot less stress, and work. Give us a call today and Steele & Vaughn will get you on your way.

Steele & Vaughn is your Greensboro Moving Company ready to provide resources and support to ease your stress as your college student readies for a new year away from home.  We wish your son or daughter a successful and happy college year!

Cool Moving Facts This Hot July

Here we are in the middle of the warmest month of the year. It’s a hot July. Movers in Greensboro are looking for ways to keep cool and calm as they prepare and carry out their Greensboro move. We here at Steele & Vaughn do not have control of the weather, but we would like to offer a time out from the heat of the day to offer some COOL moving facts with our movers in  Greensboro.

Fact #1-The moving industry took hold in the 1800s surrounding the expansion of the railroad system. The first specialized horse drawn moving wagons were introduced at the turn of the century.

Fact #2-Hiring a local moving company to handle your move can cost less than renting a truck and moving yourself.  At Steele & Vaughn, we cover labor, packing, insurance and transportation including gas and tolls. It really adds up when you cover the entire moving process yourself.

Fact #3-According to the US Census Bureau, the average American will move 11.7 times over a life-time. We are proud to report that many of our customers choose us again and again for their moving and storage needs.

Fact #4-43 million Americans move each year. That is the same number of people that enjoyed camping in 2011. That is a lot of movers and campers! Are you camping this summer to stay cool?

Fact #5 According to the Employee Relocation Council, moving is the third most stressful life event following death of a loved one and divorce. At Steele & Vaughn, we feel that it doesn’t have to be. We pride ourselves on delivering a stress-free move.

Fact #6-Ok, this one is not a moving fact but we just had to include it! In 1984 President Reagan announced July as National Ice Cream Month and the third Sunday of July as National Ice Cream Day. Movers in Greensboro, why not take a cool break from all things moving and enjoy an ice cream?

At Steele & Vaughn we are dedicated to providing all the support and resources our movers in Greensboro need to ensure you keep your cool during your move. Enjoy that ice cream!

Move Packing Safety

Welcome back for our second installment of move safety tips in honor of National Safety Month. Last week we discussed keeping your stress low to avoid accidents during the move process. Steele & Vaughn hopes we got our movers in Greensboro thinking about their well-being during the move process. This week we turn our attention to packing safety.

When packing up your belongings prior to your move, you want to consider your safety, your family’s safety and the safety of your items. Steele & Vaughn would like to offer a simple check list for helping movers in Greensboro with this.

  1. Proper packing equipment-Strong sturdy boxes are a must to avoid accidents involving items falling out the bottom.  You also want to avoid boxes that may collapse at the sides while carrying them which may cause you to lose your footing. Steele & Vaughn can provide you with high quality boxes, supplies and moving kits to ensure you have the best material for packing up your goods. For more information, give us a call.
  2. Check your environment for hazards-Before moving boxes, check to make sure the floor and surrounding area is clear of anything you could trip or slip on such as cords, toys, wet slippery spots, etc.
  3. Box weight– Consider that you may have to carry boxes up and down stairs. You should be able to lift your box without strain while remaining sturdy and strong on your feet. To avoid injury, do not over-pack with too much weight. You know your strength. Don’t overdo it!
  4. Healthy lifting-Avoid strain on your back; do not bend over to lift a box.  Instead, squat balancing your upper body weight over your hips and lift using your leg strength keeping your back straight as you stand. Also have a dolly with straps for moving and stacking your boxes. Also be sure to wear good strong sturdy footwear to support you and give you proper footing.
  5. Family safety-Keep small children and pets safely away from the packing area. You don’t want tape cutters falling into the wrong hands or a stack of boxes that look like a fun place to climb and explore.
  6. Protect your belongings-You want your items to have the best chance of arriving at your new home intact. Please click here to read Packing Help for the best ideas and tips for packing up every room in the house.  Of course, Steele & Vaughn is available to help movers in Greensboro with any part of packing. We can pack everything for you or just certain items of high value. We will meticulously wrap your belongings with the utmost care to ensure maximum protection.

Pack safely and be safe! Our next installment will feature safety on move day. We hope you’ll come back for more move safety tips.  Movers in Greensboro can trust Steele & Vaughn to provide a safe move.

National Safety Month, Lower Stress = Lower Chance for Moving Accidents

June is National Safety Month. There are many areas of our lives that can be looked at to ensure our safety.   At Steele & Vaughn Moving & Storage, we would like to share tips and ideas for keeping our Greensboro movers thinking about the safety of their families and possessions as they prepare to move and throughout the move process.

We know that Greensboro movers have countless details on their minds when preparing for their big Greensboro move day. Most experts agree that more accidents happen under stress. It is also a known fact that moving is one of the top stressful life changes that a person can go through. So most important in keeping safe during your move process is keeping your stress level as low as possible.  That is why we are dedicating our first installment of Safety Month to lowering your stress throughout your move process.

The best way to lower your stress during a move is by hiring a local reputable Greensboro mover to handle all of your packing and shipping. We wrote about how to ensure you are choosing the right Greensboro mover in our blog this past May. We invite you to go back and read those tips. Steele & Vaughn Moving & Storage is dedicated to delivering your stress-free move. We supply all the proper safety equipment and employ the safest moving industry practices to get your belongings to your new home – safe and secure. You can ease your mind and rest assured that your move will be in safe hands when you trust Steele & Vaughn Moving & Storage for your moving and packing service.

Once you take care of choosing the right Greensboro mover to handle your stress free move, it’s time to think about your personal needs through the process. What can you do to help lower your stress and therefore lower your chance for accident or injury during your move process?

Create a move plan to reduce your stress.  If you create a move plan, and follow your plan closely each step of the way, you may be surprised at how much it simplifies tasks, avoids last minute crisis, and reduces the stress of juggling multiple tasks and “to-dos” in your head. Simply write out what needs to be done week by week through your move process. You will be organized and efficient and ready for each task as it comes up helping you to feel centered and calm.

In addition, we found some great tips here at Reduce Moving Stress. We hope you’ll check it out.

You know yourself better than anyone though, so perhaps you can make a list of your own techniques for keeping you calm during your move process. What works for you when you are under stress?  Make a list. Put it where you can see it and then make a commitment to give yourself the time needed to implement your stress reducing activities. It may make all the difference in keeping your move process safe for you and your family.

Remember, during one of the most stressful times of your life, you can handle that stress with the support of a professional Greensboro mover and implement simple tips and ideas that will help you remain calm and centered through the process. Keep safe during your move process. Lower your chance of accidents while packing and moving. Be proactive by managing your stress level. Keep this in mind from the moment you decide to move.

In the next few weeks we will further reflect on Greensboro mover safety during National Safety Month so check back for more tips and ideas for your safe Greensboro move.

Stay tuned and keep safe!

Steele & Vaughn Moving & Storage, we deliver your stress-free move!
